🔗  ओं, स॒ ह ना॑व् अवतु। स॒ ह नौ॑ भुनक्तु। स॒ह वी॒र्यं॑ करवावहै। ते॒ज॒स्विना॒व् अधी॑तम् अस्तु॒ मा वि॑द्विषा॒वहै᳚। ओं शान्तिः॒ शान्तिः॒ शान्तिः॑॥
Om; tad, ha, asmad, √av. Tad, ha, asmad, √bhuj. Saha, vīrya, √kṛ. Tejasvin, adhīta, √as, mā, vi-√dviṣ. Om, śānti, śānti, śānti.
सः ह नै अवतु। सः ह नौ भुनक्तु। सह वीर्यं करवावहै। तेजस्विनौ [=तेजस्विनोः आवयोः] अधीतं अस्तु (अथवा, नौ अधीतं तेजस्वि अस्तु)। मा विद्विषावहै। ओम् शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः॥

vedo nityam adhīyatāṃ tad-uditaṃ karma svanuṣṭhīyatāṃ
teneśasya vidhīyatām apacitiḥ kāmye matis tyajyatām।
pāpaughaḥ paridhūyatāṃ bhava-sukhe doṣo'nusandhīyatām
ātmecchā vyavasīyatāṃ nija-gṛhāt tūrṇaṃ vinirgamyatām॥

veda, nityam, adhi-√i, tad-udita, karman, su-anu-√sthā,
tad, īśa, vi-√dhā, apaciti, kāmya, mati, √tyaj;
pāpa-augha, pari-√dhū, bhava-sukha, doṣa, anu-sam-√dhā,
ātma-icchā, vi-ava-√so, nija-gṛha, tūrṇa, vi-nis-√gam.

वेदः नित्यं [प्रति-दिनम्] अधीयताम् [अधेयः], तद्-उदितं [वेद-विहितं स्व-]कर्म स्वनुष्ठीयतां [स्वनुष्ठेयम्]।
तेन [स्व-कर्मणा] ईशस्य अपचितिः [पूज्या] विधीयतां [विधेया], काम्ये [कर्मणि] मतिः (मननं) त्यज्यतां [त्यज्या]।
पाप-ओघः (पाप-गणः) परिधूयतां [परिधोयः], भव-सुखे [संसार-सुखे] दोषः अनुसन्धीयताम् [अनुसन्धेयः]।
आत्म-इच्छा [आत्म-ज्ञान-इच्छा] व्यवसीयतां [व्यवसेया], निज-गृहात् (स्व-गृहात्) तूर्णं (त्वरितं) विनिर्गम्यतां [विनिर्गम्यम्]॥

Regularly study the Lord’s teaching (Veda, Vedānta). Perform your duties revealed by that (teaching). Make them your offering to the Lord. Let go of pondering (other) desirables (kāmya). Shake off (like dirt) the multitude of the unwanted (pāpas, acts and their accumulated results). Accordingly (to the teaching) see their defect even during the pleasures in living. Be resolved in the (sole) desire (to know) oneself (ātman). Immediately take leave of clinging to your natural condition (what you naturally call your ‘home,’ physically or cognitively).

saṅgaḥ satsu vidhīyatāṃ bhagavato bhaktir dṛḍhādhīyatāṃ
śānty-ādi paricīyatāṃ dṛḍhataraṃ karmāśu santyajyatām।
sad-vidvān upasṛpyatāṃ prati-dinaṃ tat-pādukā sevyatāṃ
brahmaikākṣaram arthyatāṃ śruti-śiro-vākyaṃ samākarṇyatām॥

saṅga, sat, vi-√dhā, bhagavat, bhakti, dṛḍha, adhi-√i,
śānti-ādi, pari-√ci, dṛḍhatara, karma, āśu, sam-√tyaj;
sat-vidvas, upa-√sṛp, prati-dina, tad-pādukā, √sev,
brahman, eka-akṣara, √arth, śruti-śiras-vākya, sam-ā-√karṇ.

सत्सु सङ्गः विधीयतां [विधेयः], भगवतः भक्तिः दृढा आधीयताम् [आधेया]।
शान्ति-आदि [शम-दम-आदि] परिचीयतां [परिचेयम्], कर्म दृढतरम् आशु [च] सन्त्यज्यतां [सन्त्यज्यम्]।
सत्-विद्वान् उपसृप्यताम् [उपसर्प्यः], प्रति-दिनं तद्-पादुका सेव्यतां [सेव्या]।
ब्रह्म-एक-अक्षरम् अर्थ्यताम् [अर्थ्यम्], श्रुति-शिरस्-वाक्यं [वेद-अन्त-वाक्यं] समाकर्ण्यतां [समाकर्ण्यम्]॥

Gain good company (sat-saṅga). Stay firm in your dedication to the Lord (through this teaching). Find quietude (mentally and physically – śama and dama). Firmly and quickly give up all (other) activities. Approach the best teacher. Be of service daily at the teacher’s feet. Seek brahman (the Ultimate brahman reality) through (the meaning of) the Single-Syllable (‘Om). Closely listen to the chief words of the scripture (to the Upaniṣads).

vākyārthaś ca vicāryatāṃ śruti-śiraḥ-pakṣaḥ samāśrīyatāṃ
dus-tarkāt suviramyatāṃ śrutimatas tarko'nusandhīyatām।
brahmāsmīti vibhāvyatām ahar-ahar garvaḥ parityajyatāṃ
dehe'ham-matir ujjhyatāṃ budha-janair vādaḥ parityajyatām॥

vākya-artha, ca, vi-√car, śruti-śiras-pakṣa, sam-ā-śri,
dus-tarka, su-vi-√ram, śrutimat, tarka, anu-sam-√dā;
brahma, asmad, iti, vi-√bhū, ahar, ahar, garva, pari-√tyaj,
deha, aham-mati, √ujjh, budha-jana, vāda, pari-√tyaj.

वाक्य-अर्थः च विचार्यतां [विचार्यः], श्रुति-शिरस्-पक्षः [वेद-अन्त-सिद्धान्तः] समाश्रीयतां [समाश्रेयः]।
[विचारः] दुस्-तर्कात् सुविरम्यतां [सुविरम्यः], श्रुति-मतः तर्कः अनुसन्धीताम् [अनुसन्धेयः]।
ब्रह्म अस्मि इति विभाव्यतां [विभाव्यम्], गर्वः अहर्-अहर् परित्यज्यतां [परित्यज्यः]।
देहे अहम्-मतिः उज्झ्यतां [त्यज्या], बुध-जनैः [पण्डितैः] वादः [विवादः] परित्यज्यतां [परित्यज्यः]॥

Reflect (resolving contradictions and doubts) over the meaning of the words. Resort to the (contradiction and doubt resolving) view (pakṣa) of the Upaniṣads (with the help of a valid commentary and adept teacher). Avoid unsettling speculation (dus-tarka, polemics). Side with logic in-keeping with the (whole of the) scripture (the tāt-parya, the scripture’s intended meaning). Completely absorb yourself in the idea (the ‘Bhāv’, the ‘being it’) that ‘I am brahman.’ Continually let go of any notion of arrogance (in your scholarship, etc.). Let go of the notion that ‘I am this individuality’ (this body, etc.).

kṣud-vyādhiś ca cikitsyatāṃ prati-dinaṃ bhikṣauṣadhaṃ bhujyatāṃ
svādv-annaṃ na tu yācyatāṃ vidhi-vaśāt prāptena santuṣyatām।
śītoṣṇādi viṣahyatāṃ na tu vṛthā vākyaṃ samuccāryatām
audāsīnyam abhīpsyatāṃ jana-kṛpānaiṣṭhuryam utsṛjyatām॥

kṣut-vyādhi, ca, √cit, prati-dinam, bhikṣa-auṣada, √bhuj,
svādu-anna, na, tu, √yāc, vidhi-vaśa, prāpta, sam-√tuṣ;
śīta-uṣṇa-ādi, vi-√sah, na, tu, vṛthā, vākya, sam-ud-√car,
audāsīnya, abhi-√āp, jana-kṛpā-naiṣṭhurya, ud-√sṛj.

क्षुत्-व्याधिः च चिकित्स्यतां [चिकित्स्यः], भिक्ष-ओषधं प्रति-दिनं भुज्यतां [भोज्यम्]।
न तु स्वादु-अन्नं याच्यतां [याच्यम्], विधि-वशात् [प्रारब्धात्] प्राप्तेन सन्तुष्यतां [सन्तोष्यः]।
शीत-उष्ण-आदि विषह्यतां [विषह्यम्], न तु वाक्यं वृथा समुच्चार्यतां [समुच्चार्यम्]।
औदासीन्यम् अभीप्स्यताम् [अभीप्स्यम्], जन-कृपा-नैष्ठुर्यं [स्व-जन-अनुकूलनं सर्व-जन-प्रतिकूलनं च तं] उत्सृज्यताम् [उत्सृज्यम्]॥

Still, one must treat the hunger disease and daily take food as medicine. Do not seek food as tasty (but unhealthy or addictive). Be satisfied with whatever food is properly acquired (as your due). Endure (without self-pity or complaint) the elements cold or hot, etc. (taking necessary shelter for the body’s health). Do not prattle idle words. Choose to be impartial (audāsīnya). Avoid out of pity or cruelty (taking sides) between people.

ekānte sukham āsyatāṃ paratare cetaḥ samādhīyatāṃ
pūrṇātmā susamīkṣyatāṃ jagad idaṃ tad-bādhitaṃ dṛśyatām।
prāk-karma pravilāpyatāṃ citi-balān nāpy uttaraiḥ śliṣyatāṃ
prārabdhaṃ tv iha bhujyatām atha para-brahmātmanā sthīyatām॥

eka-anta, sukham, √ās, paratara, cetas, sam-ā-√dhā,
pūrṇa-ātman, su-sam-√īkṣ, jagat, idam, tad-bādhita, √dṛś;
prāk-karman, pra-vi-√lap, citi-bala, na, api, uttara, √śliṣ,
prārabdha, tu, iha, √bhuj, atha, para-brahma-ātman, √sthā.

एकान्ते [आसने] सुखम् आस्यताम् [आस्यम्], चेतस् परतरे समाधीयतां [समाधेयम्]।
पूर्ण-आत्मा सुसमीक्ष्यतां [सुसमीक्ष्यः], इदं जगत् [इति] तद्-बाधितं दृश्यतां [दृश्यम्]।
चिति-बलात् प्राक्-कर्म [सञ्चित-कर्म] प्रविलाप्यतां [प्रविलाप्यम्], न अपि उत्तरैः [आगामि-कर्मभिः] श्लिष्यतां [श्लेष्यः]।
प्रारब्धं तु इह भुज्यतां [भोज्यम्], अथ पर-ब्रह्म-आत्मना स्थीयतां [स्थेयः]॥

In solitude (physically or cognitively), remain (sit) comfortable (sukham). Absorb your thoughts in the Ultimate. Completely and clearly see oneself as the Fullness (the Ultimate). See the refutation of all that is this universe (as real and as any danger to oneself, its witness). Annihilate all past (accumulated in previous lives) karma by the strength of your wisdom (that ‘I am brahman,’ the timeless Ultimate). Nor be contaminated by the later (āgāmin, accumulating in this life) karma (as simply being the witness of the body’s and mind’s activities). Rather, (untouched) simply (let the body and mind) experience the unfolding (prārabdha) karma. Then, remain (knowing) oneself to be the Ultimate brahman (Reality).
