akhaṇḍa-maṇḍalākāraṃ vyāptaṃ yena carācaram 
tat padaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

a-khaṇḍa-maṇḍala-ākāra, vyāpta, yad, cara-a-cara;
tad, pada, darśita, yad, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

येन चर-अ-चरं व्याप्तं, येन तद् अ-खण्ड-मण्डल-आकारं पदं दर्शितं – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru (teacher) who reveals the presence (pada, the feet of the Lord) whose form is the universal orb, encompassing all that moves and moves not.


ajñāna-timirāndhasya jñānāñjana-śalākayā 
cakṣur unmīlitaṃ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

a-jñāna-timira-andha, jñāna-añjana-śalākā;
cakṣus, unmīlita, yad, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

येन अ-ज्ञान-तिमिर-अन्धस्य चक्षुर् ज्ञान-अञ्जन-शलाकया उन्मीलितं – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru who opens our eye by the needle coated with the ointment of knowledge for one blinded by the darkness (timira, cataract) of ignorance (to the presence of the Lord).


gurur brahmā gurur viṣṇur gurur devo maheśvaraḥ 
gurur eva paraṃ brahma tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

guru, brahman, guru, viṣṇu, guru, deva, mahā-īśvara;
guru, eva, para, brahman, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

गुरुः ब्रह्मा, गुरुः विष्णुः, गुरुः देवः महा-ईश्वरः, गुरुः एव परं ब्रह्म [यः] – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru who (embodies the first) Guru: the ultimate reality (Paraṃ Brahman) as (the trinity of) Brahmā-Viṣṇu-Maheśvara (Śiva) (–the Creator, Sustainer, and Destroyer).


sthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ vyāptaṃ yat-kiñcit sa-carācaram 
tat padaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

sthāvara, jaṅgama, vyāpta, yad-kim-cid, sa-cara-a-cara;
tad, pada, darśita, yad, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

येन यद्-किम्-चिद् स-चर-अ-चरं स्थावरं जङ्गमं व्याप्तं, [येन] तद् पदं दर्शितं – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru who reveals the presence (pada, the feet of the Lord) that encompasses all the plants and animals (sthāvaraṃ jañgamam), and whatever (inanimate that) moves or moves not.


cinmayaṃ vyāpi yat sarvaṃ trai-lokyaṃ sa-carācaram 
tat padaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

cit-maya, vyāpin, yad, sarva, trai-lokya, sa-cara-a-cara;
tad, pada, darśita, yad, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

यद् चित्-मयं सर्वं स-चर-अ-चरं त्रै-लोक्यं व्यापि, [येन] तद् पदं दर्शितं – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru who reveals the presence (pada, the feet of the Lord) who as consciousness (cin-maya) pervades the three worlds (heaven, atmosphere, and Earth), whatever moves or moves not.


sarva-śruti-śiro-ratna-virājita-padāmbu-jaḥ 
vedāntāmbu-ja-sūryo yas tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

sarva-śruti-śiras-ratna-virājita-pada-ambu-ja;
veda-anta-ambu-ja-sūrya, yad, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

यः सर्व-श्रुति-शिरस्-रत्न-विराजित-पद-अम्बु-जः वेदान्त-अम्बु-ज-सूर्यः [च] – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru whose lotus-like presence (pada, feet) are revealed by the crown jewel scriptures, who like the sun (opens, blossoms from the mire) the lotus-like Vedānta scriptures.


caitanyaḥ śāśvataḥ śānto vyomātīto nir-añjanaḥ 
bindu-nāda-kalātītas tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

caitanya, śāśvata, śānta, vyoma-atīta, nis-añjana;
bindu-nāda-kala-atīta, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

[यः] शाश्वतः शान्तः व्योम-अतीतः निस्-अञ्जनः बिन्दु-नाद-कल-अतीतः चैतन्यः – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru who is consciousness, eternal and peaceful (as the changeless witness), taintless and extending beyond space itself, who is beyond the manifest (bindu, the seen), the unmanifest (nāda, the heard), and time.


jñāna-śakti-samārūḍhas tattva-mālā-vibhūṣitaḥ 
bhukti-mukti-pradātā ca tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

jñāna-śakti-samārūḍha, tattva-mālā-vibhūṣita;
bhukti-mukti-pradātṛ, ca, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

[यः] ज्ञान-शक्ति-समारूढः तत्त्व-माला-विभूषितः भुक्ति-मुक्ति-प्रदाता च – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru who is firmly rooted in the power of knowledge, adorned with the mālā of truth, and the bestower of bliss of freedom.


aneka-janma-samprāpta-karmda-bandha-vidāhine 
ātma-jñānāgni-dānena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

an-eka-janma-samprāpta-karma-bandha-vidāhin;
ātma-añjāna-agni-dāna, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

[यस्मै] आत्म-ज्ञान-अग्नि-दानेन अन्-एक-जन्म-सम्प्राप्त-कर्म-बन्ध-विदाहिने – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru who gives the knowledge of the ātman (self), which like a fire burns the bonds (the fuel) of karma accumulated in countless births.


śoṣaṇaṃ bhava-sindhoś ca jñāpanaṃ sāra-sampadaḥ 
guroḥ pādodakaṃ samyak tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

śoṣaṇa, bhava-sindhu, ca, jñāpaṇa, sāra-sampad;
guru, pāda-udaka, samyak, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

[यस्य] गुरोः सम्यक् पाद-उदकं भव-सिन्धोः शोषणं, सार-सम्पदः ज्ञापनं च – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru whose water for (washing) the guru’s feet itself completely dries up the ocean of becoming (for the devotee) and which is the source of (the perennially flowing) knowledge of the essential wealth.


na guror adhikaṃ tattvaṃ na guror adhikaṃ tapaḥ 
tattva-jñānāt paraṃ nāsti tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

na, guru, adhika, tattva, na, guru, adhika, tapas;
tattva-jñāna, para, na, √as, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

न गुरोः अधिकं तत्त्वम्। न गुरोः अधिकं तपस्। न तत्त्व-ज्ञानात् परम् अस्ति। तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru as there is no greater truth (tattva, reality) than this guru, no greater prayerful disciple than that to this guru, and there is nothing beyond the knowledge of this truth (tattva, reality).


man-nāthaḥ śrī-jagan-nātho mad-guruḥ śrī-jagad-guruḥ 
mad-ātmā sarva-bhūtātmā tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

mad-nātha, śrī-jagat-nātha, mad-guru, śrī-jagat-guru;
mad-ātman, sarva-bhūta-ātman, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

[यः] मद्-नाथः श्री-जगत्-नाथः मद्-गुरुः श्री-जगत्-गुरुः मद्-आत्मा सर्व-भूत-आत्मा – तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru – my Lord and the glorious Lord of the universe; my guru and the glorious guru of the universe; my self and the self of all beings.


gurur ādir anādiś ca guruḥ parama-daivatam 
guroḥ parataraṃ nāsti tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ 

guru, ādi, an-ādi, ca, guru, parama-daivata;
guru, paratara, na, √as, tad, śrī-guru, namas.

गुरुः आदिः अन्-आदिः च। गुरुः परम-दैवतम्। न गुरोः परतरम् अस्ति। तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमस्॥

Salutation to the Glorious Guru as this guru is the beginning (of all) yet beginningless; this guru is the ultimate deity, and there is none superior to this guru.


brahmānandaṃ parama-sukha-daṃ kevalaṃ jñāna-mūrtiṃ
dvandvātītaṃ gagana-sa-dṛśaṃ tat-tvam-asy-ādi-lakṣyam 
ekaṃ nityaṃ vi-malam acalaṃ sarva-dhī-sākṣi-bhūtam
bhāvātītaṃ tri-guṇa-rahitaṃ sad-guruṃ taṃ namāmi 

brahma-ānanda, parama-sukha-da, kevala, jñāna-mūrti,
dvan-dva-atīta, gagana-sa-dṛśa, tad-tvam-asi-ādi-lakṣya;
eka, nitya, vi-mala, a-cala, sarva-dhī-sa-akṣi-bhūta,
bhāva-atīta, tri-guṇa-rahita, sat-guru, tad, √nam.

ब्रह्म-आनन्दं परम-सुख-दं केवलं ज्ञान-मूर्तिं द्वन्द्व-अतीतं गगन-स-दृशं तद्-त्वम्-असि-आदि-लक्ष्यम् एकं नित्यं वि-मलम् अ-चलं सर्व-धी-साक्षि-भूतं भाव-अतीतं त्रि-गुण-रहितं – तं सत्-गुरुं नमामि॥

Salutation to that True Guru – the fullness of Brahman, the source of ultimate joy, the absolute (kevalam), the embodiment of knowledge, beyond duality, who is (vast and untainted) like space, indicated by the (mahā-vākyas, such as) ‘Tat tvam asi’ (That One you are, ChanU.6.8.7…6.16.3), One only, timeless, pure, constant, existing as the witness of all minds, beyond all states of being, and free from the three guṇas.


tvam eva mātā ca pitā tvam eva
tvam eva bandhuś ca sakhā tvam eva 
tvam eva vidyā draviṇaṃ tvam eva
tvam eva sarvaṃ mama deva-deva 

yuṣmad, eva, mātṛ, ca, pitṛ, yuṣmad, eva,
yuṣmad, eva, bandhu, ca, sakhi, yuṣmad, eva;
yuṣmad, eva, vidyā, draviṇa, yuṣmad, eva,
yuṣmad, eva, sarva, asmad, deva-deva.

त्वम् एव माता, त्वम् एव पिता च। त्वम् एव बन्धुः, त्वम् एव सखा च। त्वम् एव विद्या। त्वम् एव द्रविणम्। त्वम् एव सर्वं, [हे] मम देव-देव॥

O Lord of Lords, You are the mother; You are the father; You are the kinsman and You are the friend; You are knowledge itself; You are alone the wealth; You indeed are my everything.
